Well went to see physio yesterday, all going well and I am able to walk in the boot without crutches using a normal walking motion and normal speed. I am also driving everywhere now and my foot fits back into a normal shoe, there is only slight swelling at the end of a busy day and ice and elevation fix that really fast. I have been sneaking little walks to the bathroom wearing only my socks and it is a little "limpy" but still okay and seems to get a bit easier each time. The foot looks really good, slight line where scar is but really faint and no real swelling with a lovely little arch underfoot. I am very pleased with it so far. I have a bunch of exercises to do if today's x-ray and consultant visit turn out okay. The x-rays and visit are to get the go ahead for the physiotherapist to implement the exercises and I think that this will go well.
Still not climbed any stairs or done any fast walking yet and cannot lift up onto toes but hopefully the strengthening exercises will help with this. So just wait and see what x-ray shows :-)

Consultant visit went well. All going according to schedule and the xray showed bone healing well and also finally saw the two screws in place -they are 75mm long!!! they look huge and I cant feel them which is really weird. Consultant is now happy for physio to carry on and I started all the exercises. The foot seems to swell a little more now that the boot is off so I ice and elevate at the end of each day and this seems to help. I have started to cycle, its not far, just a mile or two on a flat surface and I don't pedal hard but I can feel it pulling when I flex and extend the foot but I am managing well enough so hopefully by the time the weather improves I can go back to cycling to work which is usually a five mile cycle but so much more convenient than parking!
So now it seems to just be about building up the strength and recovering, I have a repeat xray in march and will see the consultant then but if it continues in this fashion I guess he will discharge me from his care. Overall I am very pleased with the surgery, I am at the moment as mobile as I was before surgery but definitely improving every day and the pain that I had pre operatively is not there, I can fit back into all my shoes (yes I tried them all) and I am back at work and driving as before. It was definitely a lesson in patience because I did not put any weight on that foot until after seven weeks and kept it elevated for eight of those weeks above heart height for the majority of the day and used ice each evening and morning once cast was off, I kept taking the vitamin D3 and calcichew and did lots of exercises to build upper body strength (bingo wings are much smaller) so although I do feel really lucky about how things turned out, I guess it is very important to do what you are told and to put some recovery effort in as well.
I have decided to finish the blog now but will update in March when I have the final check because I would like to chart how the recovery is going. So for anyone who is reading and wondering if it is worth having, so far I would say Yes.
